Puppy at Christmas time

Around this time of year, some families contemplate choosing a puppy as a Christmas gift. And we don’t blame you, dogs are the best things since sliced bread.

Although we know that getting a dog can quickly become the best decision you ever made, adding a four-legged friend to your household is not something to take lightly.

Here are 5 things you should consider before getting a puppy this festive season.

1. Are you ready for a 10-to-15-year commitment?

Dogs are a decade-long commitment and don’t stay small forever. Although a puppy’s cuteness factor is mesmerising, too many dogs end up in the pound once they mature because their owners didn’t think of the long-term.

Don’t be one of these people and research the breed you’re interested in, look up their characteristics as an adult dog and consider if this is what you are after before you get a puppy.

2. What will your household look like in one, five- and ten-years’ time?

We all know our life can change quickly. Before choosing a puppy, consider if your life goals and aspirations will still suit a four-legged friend ten years down the road. Will you be downsizing soon? Then perhaps consider a smaller breed. Are you hoping to grow your family? Then perhaps consider a breed that is great with children.

Do you currently work from home, but will you (want to) work elsewhere in the future? Look into pet care services that can take care of your pooch when you are away and if these costs will fit into your budget.

3. Will your finances be able to cover pet costs?

Speaking of costs, having a pet will create priceless memories but caring for one can be pricey. Vet bills, pet insurance, pet sitting, dog food, toys, bedding, treats, the list goes on. Before taking the leap and getting a puppy as a Christmas gift, write up a budget to see if this is realistic and viable. This way you will know whether you can give your puppy the love and care he deserves, no matter the cost.

4. Do you have enough time?

Ask any puppy owner, and they will all agree that having a petite pooch in your home is hard work. It’s more than worth it, but it does take time. If time is something you’re always short on, a puppy might not be for you.

Besides walking and feeding your pooch, you will have to invest time in training and socialising, as well as regular vet visits. And let’s not forget those midnight trips to your dog’s open-air toilet!

5. Who will look after your dog when you are on holidays?

There’s a big chance that you will want to travel within your dog’s lifetime. Dogs are always up for an adventure and would love to join you on holidays, but this might not always be possible.

Before choosing a puppy as a Christmas gift, have a think about how often you plan to travel and who will look after your dog when you are away. You might have a neighbour or family member who can pop in for a visit, or consider an experienced pet sitter while you are away.

Two alternatives to choosing a puppy as a Christmas gift

Do you feel like you are ready for all the love a dog brings into the home, but you are not sure if a puppy is the way to go? How about considering rescuing a dog from a shelter or rescue organisation?

Rescue dogs have the biggest hearts and are not as high maintenance as puppies due to their age. Rescue organisations work hard to get to know the dogs in their care and can help you find a loving pooch that will fit seamlessly into your family life.

Another alternative is to wait one year before deciding on getting a puppy. This may sound like a long time, but it will give you the chance to go through the seasons of life and evaluate your day-to-day commitments to see if having a puppy would work.
